Study Shows Drunk Driving Increase Due to Binge Drinking in US:

After a decline of alcohol-impaired driving throughout most of the 1990s, a new study shows that driving while intoxicated has increased and researchers believe binge drinking is the cause.

Drunk driving showed a long, slow decline between 1993 and 1997, from 123 million incidents a year to 116 million. But according to a new national survey, from 1997 to 1999 that increased 37 percent to 159 million and that rate continued in 2002.

The survey taken from the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, also found that four out of five episodes of alcohol-impaired driving were reported by people who also reported binge drinking, defined as consuming five or more drinks or more than one occasion.

The leading cause of death in the United States is motor vehicle accidents for people between the ages of 1 and 34. Thirty percent of Americans will be involved in an alcohol-related crash in their lifetimes. Such accidents cause damages worth more than $50 billion a year.

Drunk Driving Penalties in United States are Getting Stiffer:

Groups like Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (MADD) due to their hard work, hundreds of new DUI laws have been passed nationwide since 1980.

All states have adopted 21 as the legal drinking age. Two-thirds of the states have now passed Administrative License Revocation (ALR) laws, which allow the arresting officer to take the license of drivers who fail or refuse to take a breath test.

All states have now lowered the legal blood alcohol concentration (BAC) limit from .10 to .08 percent for adults, and all states have passed Zero Tolerance laws which prohibit drivers under 21 from having any amount of alcohol in their system.

As a further matter, the penalties have increased for drinking and driving, especially for repeat offenders. Many state legislatures have passed laws requiring mandatory jail time for repeat DUI convictions. The fines have gotten hefty, the length of license suspension has gotten longer and getting a "hardship" license just to go back and forth to work is getting more difficult.
