Here are highlights from Iowa law on operating a vehicle while intoxicated (Iowa Code 9-30-5). Click on the links for further explanation of the legal terms associated with drunk driving in Iowa.

Zero Tolerance BAC Level in Iowa is .02 for anyone under the age of 21 years old.

Enhanced Penalty can be the result of a BAC Level of .15 or speeding, traffic accident, diving with minors, refusing to provide a sample and previous conviction all can result in heavier penalties or fine.

Implied Consent Law in Iowa allows the police to order a blood, breath or urine sample if suspected of drinking and driving and if refused mandatory license suspension can be applied.

License Suspension 1st Offense: 180 days
License Suspension 2nd Offense: 1 year, Mandatory Jail Time
License Suspension 3rd Offense: 2 years

Mandatory Alcohol Education is given to the driver to restore driving privileges and can  reduce fines and penalties given to the driver.  This program is to educate the driver on the dangers of drinking and driving in hopes to further deter from previous behaviour.

Possible Ignition Interlock can be issued and you are responsible for the cost and maintenance of the machine that is hooked up to your ignition that detects alcohol.

Hardship License while license suspended can be given after 90 days if prove hardship for example you are the sole provider of your family.
